Key US passport photo requirements
- Size: 2×2 inches, head height 1–1⅜ inches (roughly 50–69% of image height).
- Background: plain white or off‑white; no patterns or heavy shadows.
- Expression: neutral with both eyes open; no exaggerated smile.
- Attire: everyday clothing; no uniforms. Religious head coverings allowed if they do not cast shadows and the full face is visible.
- Glasses: not allowed in new photos (except rare medical exceptions with signed statement).
- Recency: taken in the last 6 months, no filters or heavy edits.

How to take a usable photo at home
- Use diffuse lighting in front of you; avoid strong backlight and harsh shadows.
- Stand ~0.5–1.5 m from a white/off‑white wall; keep the camera at eye level.
- Keep a neutral expression, both eyes open, and face the camera squarely.
- Remove glasses. If wearing a head covering, ensure your face is fully visible and evenly lit.
